The Lufkin Police Department is advising motorists to avoid several intersections in Lufkin due to an accident involving a train and an 18-wheeler.
The following railroad crossings are blocked for an undetermined amount of time:
  • Feagin Drive/Southwood Drive at Loop 287, this includes both intersections south and north of the loop (this is the scene of the accident)
  • Lazy Lane at Feagin Drive
  • Pershing Street at Feagin Drive
According to a Facebook post on the Lufkin Police Department's page, the accident involves an 18-wheeler and a train near the Loop 287 intersection at Feagin/Southwood Drive.  The 18-wheeler, which was hauling a piece of heavy equipment on a “low-boy” style trailer, bottomed out at the crossing and got stuck. Thankfully, the driver of the 18-wheeler and his dog fled the cab before the collision. They did not report any injuries, however, the train crew reported minor injuries from the impact.
The train did not derail from the tracks, however a hazardous materials crew is on the scene to deal with the diesel that was spilled from the 18-wheeler.
Lufkin Police are asking for motorists to avoid traveling on Feagin or Southwood Drives until further notice.  Also, anyone that usually travels on College Drive into that Loop 287 intersection is asked to find an alternate route such as Brentwood Drive or Highway 59.
