The Lufkin Police Department announced today (1/5/17) that they are now accepting applications for the upcoming Citizen’s Police Academy. This program is designed for local citizens to better understand the issues and situations that police officers face each day.

The Lufkin Police Department will sponsor this academy, free of charge, to local citizens in which they will be instructed in criminal law, arrest powers, search and seizure laws, department policies and procedures, use of force, criminal investigations, traffic law, accident investigations, narcotics investigations, special operations, the judicial process, as well as interactive use with firearms and firearms safety, use of force simulator, mock traffic stops and building searches, in addition to many other areas of law enforcement.

This academy will be held on Tuesday nights from 6-9 p.m. for 12 weeks tentatively to begin in February (exact date TBA). Participants will also have an opportunity to conduct a ride-along with a patrol officer while attending the academy. Participants will have an opportunity to see and learn from the officers about their role and duties in our community, as well as the hazards and issues that they face in our rapidly changing society.

If you, or someone you know, would like to participate in this exciting program, contact Lt. Jerry Smith at (936) 630-0508, or stop by the Lufkin Police Department for an application. Space is limited to only 25 participants and it is expected to fill up quickly. You must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
