It has been unseasonably hot for most of October, even by East Texas standards.  I attended the Region III Cross Country Meet in Huntsville on Monday and observed several well-conditioned athletes who had to be treated with ice baths and IV drips following the race.  We're definitely due for a strong cold front; well, get ready.

That cold front we've been hoping for is going to be pushing through on Wednesday, but it will bring with it the possibility of severe weather over the eastern third of Texas.  It looks like the worst of the storms will hit the Pineywoods on Wednesday, mainly between daybreak and early afternoon.  Severe storms are never a good thing, but I'd rather they come during the daylight than at night time.

So...What Can We Expect From These Storms?

In a hazardous weather message, The National Weather Service in Shreveport indicates that "all modes of severe weather will be possible with these storms". More specifically, it looks like heavy downpours and damaging winds will be the most frequent component of these storms.  Between 1-2 inches of rain over a short period of time is expected across much of Deep East Texas, however, there may be some isolated areas with over 2 inches.  Winds gusting 60-70 mph are possible within the squall line just ahead of the cold front passage.

Quarter-sized hail is possible is some of these storms as well.  Tornadoes are not out of the question, however, the National Weather Service in Shreveport categorizes their possibility of happening as 'very low' in the Pineywoods.  The Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma indicates that the Houston area and over to the Golden Triangle area of Texas will have the highest likelihood for twisters.

Once the severe weather passes by late Wednesday afternoon, get ready for Fall-like conditions to return to East Texas.  Highs should be in the 70s to near 80, and over night lows will be in the 40s and 50s.
