Diboll, Timpson, Newton Rolling to Regionals in Pigskin Playoffs
We've made our way to the 3rd round of the Texas UIL High School Football Playoffs. This Friday night, it's time to start the Regional Round of the playoffs. Several teams from Deep East Texas will by trying to punch their ticket to round 4 - Timpson Bears, Diboll Lumberjacks and Newton Eagles.
Let's take a quick look at each of their games.
TIMPSON/BECKVILLE
We'll start first with the Class 2A showdown between Timpson and Beckville. Halfway through the regular season it became apparent that these two teams were two of the best in the state. Before the regular season even came to an end, this third week of the playoffs was already circled.
Well, now, that week is here and it will be a mammoth game of two powerhouses Friday night at Homer Bryce Stadium at SFA. Last year, these two teams met deep in the playoffs and Timpson prevailed with a 55-14 victory. After two playoff games this year, Timpson is averaging nearly 70 points a game. Meanwhile, the Bearcats have hung 50 points on both their opponents in the post-season, so there could be some offensive fireworks happening Friday night.
DIBOLL/LITTLE RIVER ACADEMY
We move from offensive power to a stifling defense. Through two playoff wins, Diboll's opponents have not been able to find the end zone. In fact, in four of their last five games, the Lumberjacks have pitched shutouts. Diboll started the season with losses is three of their first four games, but since then, the 'Jacks have been chopping down opponents.
Diboll's regional showdown will be against Little River Academy. The Bumblebees have only one loss on the season, and that was to their district's champion, Lorena. In all likelihood, the winner of the Diboll/Little River Academy game will be facing Lorena in the next round of the playoffs. Go 'Jacks!!
NEWTON/WASKOM
When you get deep into the playoffs, you've come to expect that the Newton Eagles will still be a topic of conversation, and this year is no exception. The Eagles have only one loss this year and that was to West Orange - Stark, who is still rolling through the Class 3A playoffs.
This Friday's game against the Waskom Wildcats could prove to be an epic match. Waskom only has one loss and that was to Timpson. It's interesting to note that in the past few weeks Waskom and Newton have both played Corrigan-Camden, and each defeated the Bulldogs by an identical 62-7 score. This should be a great game Friday night in Nacogdoches.
