Driving to Lufkin on HWY 103 from a quick trip out of town last week I started noticing flashes of light between the trees. I thought I had seen a falling star.

As I got closer to town I noticed that it was a spotlight or searchlight bouncing off the clouds. I immediately knew what it was and why it was there.

It was Monday, December 20th, 2021 and that just happened to be the first day you could buy fireworks in Texas for New Year's Eve celebrations. The last day to buy fireworks is Saturday, January 1st, 2021, New Years Day.

The search light was coming from a fireworks stand, advertising the fact that they were open.

Why doesn't every business in town have a spotlight?

If it's okay for these businesses to have a searchlight shouldn't everyone be able to use them?  If there is a law that prohibits their use in or near the city limits I haven't found it.

I did some digging online and even searched the Lufkin Code of Ordinances. I guess if you want a spotlight for your business, go for it.

When can you buy fireworks in Texas?

We typically think of fireworks as something you do on the 4th of July. Sales begin on June 24th and end at midnight on July 4th.

You can also buy fireworks for New Year's celebrations starting December 20th and ending at midnight on January 1st of the following year.

There are also provisions for Cinco de Mayo from May 1st - May 5th, but you have to be less than 100 miles from the Mexican border for that one.
