The man suspected of driving a vehicle involved in a fatal auto-pedestrian hit-and-run accident Sunday morning has turned himself in to authorities. He is identified as Roberto Carlos Guerrero, 32, of Lufkin.

According to Jessica Pebsworth, Communications Director with the City of Lufkin, the Lufkin Police Department was contacted by Guerrero’s attorney earlier this week. The attorney identified Guerrero as the suspect and said he would turn himself in at the Angelina County Jail once the Department had obtained a warrant for his arrest.  Guerrero was arrested Wednesday morning (December 8)

According to a news release, Guerrero was traveling southbound on Timberland Drive around 1:30 a.m. Sunday in a Chevy Impala when he allegedly hit 53-year-old Gabriel Garcia. Garcia was crossing Timberland Drive near Paul Avenue on foot at the time of the accident. Garcia was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and pronounced dead at 1:50 a.m.

Guerrero is charged with accident involving injury or death. (mugshot is from a 2018 arrest) The incident remains under investigation.

Police in Lufkin and Nacogdoches are investigating two other hit-and-run accidents in which no arrests have yet to be made.

Nacogdoches Police responded to a fatal accident on December 2 on South Street.  The deceased victim was identified as Gerardo Castro, 70, of Nacogdoches.

On December 5, Lufkin Police responded to a reported hit-and-run accident on Highway 94 in Hudson.  In that incident, a man riding a motorcycle was struck by a person driving a pick-up truck.  The driver of the motorcycle, identified as 28-year-old Ernesto Maldonado of Lufkin was transported to CHI St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment. No update on his condition has been provided at this time.
