Railroad Work Leads to Closure of Busy Lufkin Intersections
The intersections under the overpass at Loop 287 and Southwood Drive/Feagin Drive in Lufkin tend to get very busy. Traffic from the Walmart Shopping Center and Angelina College frequently leads to a backlog of vehicles coming from College Drive (FM 819) to the Loop. There is a railroad crossing at two intersections at this location and that's exactly where Union Pacific Railroad will be doing some work and re-planking Saturday and Monday. This will require closure of the roadways on those days. Over the past several weeks, Union Pacific workers have been continuing this ongoing project of updating and upgrading the railroad and railroad planks.
Work is scheduled for Saturday, March 20, and again on Monday, March 22, at the railroad crossings located at FM 324/FM 819 (Southwood/College) outside Loop 287 and Southwood Drive/Feagin Drive inside Loop. The crossings are located beneath overpass in Lufkin and should not impact traffic on the loop.
Work will begin on the west side of State Loop 287 on Saturday, the 20th and move inside the loop to the east side on the 22nd. This area does experience heavy traffic during peak travel hours. Anyone that usually uses those intersections to get to the shopping areas around Walmart or to get to Angelina College or to take a short cut to Highway 59 from the Loop may want to consider alternate routes through Monday.

Road Safe Traffic Systems, Pflugerville, Texas, will provide traffic control during work hours. Motorists are urged to obey all traffic control and reduce speed near the work zones.
