Smokey Bear is an iconic figure and a great reminder because 87% of wildfires are caused by humans. Now more than ever we need to prevent wildfires.

Smokey Bear is the mascot for fire prevention out in the wild from the U.S. Forest Service. Sparky is the mascot for fire prevention in the home from the National Fire Protection Association.

Fire prevention week encompasses all of these entities. This is a great time to talk about everything from campfire safety to your family's plan in case of a house fire.

This Is The Week

Fire prevention week is October 3rd - 9th, 2021. To celebrate get out the ladder and change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

The National Fire Protection Association campaign this year is "Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety!" This works to educate everyone on the different sounds that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms make.

Educating your family on these sounds, and what to expect in the event of an emergency could save their lives. Put together a fire escape plan and go through it at least twice a year with your family.

Beep, Beep, Beep

When you hear a beep, get on your feet. Leave the structure and stay out. Call 911 from your agreed-upon meeting place. If you hear a chirping smoke alarm then change that battery. It's easy and saves lives.

If you have smoke alarms that are over 10 years old, you should replace them completely. For more fire safety tips and a ton of resources for your family check out fireprevetionweek.org and sparky.org for the kids.
