Nacogdoches Named in Top 30 for Best Basketball Cities in the U.S.
The SFA Lumberjacks have four straight Southland Conference titles, three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, and two appearances into the 3rd round of that same tournament. Those kinds of numbers have gotten Nacogdoches noticed on a national scale.
WalletHub recently released a report ranking the best and worst cities in America for college basketball. Over 290 cities/markets were rated and as you might expect, cities such as Chapel Hill, home of the University of North Carolina, and Los Angeles (UCLA, USC), and Lexington, Kentucky (UK) placed in the top 10. But, thanks to the recent performances of our Lumberjacks, the city of Nacogdoches ranks in at number 28. That puts the 'Oldest Town in Texas' ahead of such cities as Austin, College Station, Baton Rouge, Stillwater, San Antonio, South Bend, and, oh, by the way, Huntsville, Texas.
WalletHub used several different factors in their methodology to make their final rankings. Some of those categories included ticket prices for games (51st), most accessible basketball coliseums, most engaged basketball fans, (62nd) and best performing college basketball teams over the past 3 years. In that last category, Nacogdoches, i.e., SFA ranked #1!
A new coach, a new system, and a whole plethora of new players came into SFA for the 2016-2017 season, and even though the conference championship wasn't attained this year, the 'Jacks still excelled to a 2nd place finish and will now play in the Southland Conference Tournament in Katy where they will try to punch their ticket for a fourth straight NCAA Tourney appearance.
Axe 'em, Jacks!
