Raguet Street in Lufkin, runs right behind the radio station. I wondered if I was alone in seeing a man walking around the with a katana. Then after taking a look around facebook, it seems I was not.

It's perfectly legal to walk around brandishing a sword in Texas. Yep, it's not just the wild wild west in East Texas, it's also ancient Japan. Anything you could pretend to use in a larping match is fair game. So if you thought it was a cool thing to do, get your knives out. Be warned, if you test this law, you might get to talk to law enforcement.

Governor Greg Abbot signed this law (House Bill 1935) into effect in 2017, during the good old pre-Covid days. Any blade longer than 5.5 inches is now perfectly fine to tote around. There are still some restrictions, according to your location, like in bars and some restaurants.

That's where Knife Rights comes in. Yes there is an NRA type association for knives. They are in the middle of trying to pass HB 956 though the Texas Senate. This bill would remove the few restrictions that are left for knife toting. Step one is done, and has already passed the Texas House of Representatives.

If passed the bill would give people the right to have swords, and knives longer than 5.5 inches in even more places. Bars, churches, and amusement parks are some of the places they would like to see the restrictions lifted. Knife Rights has been working to repeal knife laws in Texas and many states around the country.
