Shooting at Fort Lauderdale Airport: 5 Dead, 8 Injured; Shooter in Custody [UPDATED]
UPDATE 4:45 p.m. ET: Apparently the shooter, Esteban Santiago, had flown into the airport earlier in the day. He had legally checked a firearm into a bag, which he then retrieved at the baggage claim area where he allegedly opened fire. There are some reports that Santiago had been in an altercation on the flight to Fort Lauderdale.
UPDATE 3:30 p.m. ET: Earlier reports of a second shooter turned out to be false. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel told reporters that the only shots fired were by the gunman in Terminal 2. He also noted that the suspect was taken into custody unharmed, contrary to information that had been circulating.
UPDATE: 2:55 p.m. ET: The TSA has sent an alert saying that there is a second shooter at the airport who has not been detained. (Note: this turned out to be incorrect.)
UPDATE 2:45 p.m. ET: Authorities have revealed that the shooter's name is Esteban Santiago. He apparently had a military ID. This information was given to CNN by Senator Bill Nelson of Florida, who was informed by the head of the TSA.
UPDATE 2:15 p.m. ET: CNN is reporting that five people were killed. The Broward County Sheriff says that eight more were injured, with many being taken to a local hospital.
The shooter was wounded as well. Investigators plan to interview him once he has finished receiving medical help.
Original story begins here:
