A columnist at the New York Post is defending Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas Governor and Presidential prospect who is drawing fire for speaking out against having babies out of wedlock.

Columnist Andrea Peyser wrote that practically everybody in Hollywood and New York went ballistic when Huckabee remarked that it's troubling to see a rich unmarried actress like Natalie Portman flaunting her pregnancy to the world at the Academy Awards.  He was criticized coast to coast by people who accused him of attacking Portman and motherhood itself.

Huckabee said he wasn't attacking Portman. He was saying that being pregnant and unmarried shouldn't be glorified because "there aren't really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie."

Peyser praised Huckabee for speaking the truth, and pointed to Census Bureau figures that show 30 percent of families headed by a single mother live in poverty, compared with just six percent of married couples with families.

The Census Bureau also reports three fourths of all black babies and half of all Hispanic babies are born out of wedlock.  We also know that fatherless girls are more likely to get pregnant as teens, and fatherless boys are more likely to end up in prison.
