Get Excited, the First Stunning Teaser for Natalie Portman’s ‘Jackie’ Is Here
In the first trailer for Pablo Larraín’s Jackie, Natalie Portman recites part of the First Lady’s 1963 interview with Life magazine. The interview, which took place the week following John F. Kennedy’s assassination, marked the origins of the presidential Camelot reference. She told the reporter, “There will be great presidents again, but there will never be another Camelot.” That quote may be about the former president’s legacy, but make no mistake, Larraín’s biopic is all about the woman of its title.
Jackie follows Portman in the hours and week after JFK’s assassination as she recounts the events to Billy Crudup’s nameless reporter. The teaser shows flashbacks of the First Lady’s 1962 White House broadcast, shots of the motorcade moments after the assassination, and the First Couple watching a musical performance. The Camelot reference in the trailer is a historical one, but the titular song from the 1960 musical that opens the trailer also plays during one of the film’s most phenomenal and heart-wrenching sequences.
Portman’s been getting tons of buzz for her performance in the film and being dubbed a Best Actress frontrunner for the 2017 Oscars. And it’s praise well-deserved. I saw the film at the Toronto International Film Festival and Portman gives a startling performance unlike anything she’s done before. This is definitely a film you won’t want to miss, especially in the theater.
Jackie also stars Peter Sarsgaard as Bobby Kennedy, Greta Gerwig and John Hurt. The film will be released by Fox Searchlight on December 2, just in time for awards season. Check out the poster below.
