The obsession with our phones is reaching deadly proportions.

A man died Monday when he fell into the icy Chicago River after his phone fell in the water.

Ken Hoang, 26, lost the phone around midnight and decided to climb a railing to grab the phone, but wound up falling in the river.

Two of his friends jumped into the water to help him. One of those friends, a man, wound up in the hospital, while the third person – a woman – went missing and is believed to have died.

Witnesses to the scene called 911. Officials found Hoang and his friend and pulled them out of the water. Hoang died later at the hospital, while his friend was listed in critical condition.

It's the second unusual fatal incident to occur this week regarding cell phones. In Florida, a man was shot and killed in a movie theater after getting into an argument over texting.
