Don’t Plan On Getting A Job With U-Haul If You Smoke
I think that the headline is pretty straight-forward. U-Haul - the do-it-yourself delivery company - will not be hiring any new workers that are nicotine users. This is part of a new nicotine-free hiring policy that will go into effect on February 1st.
According to a press release from UHaul.com:
U-Haul International, an industry leader committed to promoting and empowering a healthy workforce, will soon be the first major company in its field to decline job applicants who are nicotine users.
This new policy will affect U-Haul operations in 21 states including: Arizona, Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Washington. (Yes, even our local Texas U-Haul locations will be under this new policy.) However, this nicotine-free policy will only affect new applicants. Current employees will not be impacted by it.
Anyone that is applying for a job with U-Haul will be questioned about their nicotine use during the application process, and in states where nicotine testing is allowed, the applicants will have to consent to a nicotine screening process.
This may sound a bit intense to you, but it's all part of a "Healthier You" program that U-Haul has in place.
Currently, the closest U-Haul to us with any job openings is in Longview, and there are several there. However, don't apply if you have to have a smoke break every now and then.
