The Lufkin School Board has voted to seek competitive bids on some much-needed repairs and modifications at Abe Martin Stadium.

At this week's finance meeting, the board learned that the stadium's 40-year-old light poles are corroding and concrete at the stadium is deteriorating.

Board president Trent Ashby voted against the motion to seek bids, saying he saw no reason to bid the project until the board is ready to begin work on the project.

Ashby said he thinks it would be better to put off the repairs until the next budget cycle because it's not an emergency, and there is no immediate danger to students or the public.

Other board members say they voted to bid the project now so they can get an idea of what the work will cost.

The bidding process will ask for separate contracts for replacing the stadium light poles and repairing the concrete.  The board will also seek bids on combining both projects into one contract.
