In 1969, an oil spill polluted the beaches near Santa Barbara, California.  A US Senator named Gaylord Nelson saw the effects of this catastrophe first hand, and in response, he wanted to raise awareness about the environment. So, was born Earth Day.

For the past 53 years, Earth Day has been celebrated worldwide by billions of people. It's observed every April 22 in order to promote awareness for the health of our environment.

Angelina Beautiful/Clean (AB/C) is celebrating Earth Day by hosting its annual Shred Day! The agency holds this event to make it easy to recycle your unwanted documents at the Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce (1615 S. Chestnut) on Friday, April 22nd from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Angelina Beautiful/Clean wants to give East Texans the chance to easily and safely recycle paper that would otherwise end up in a landfill or as roadside litter. Security Shredding will shred documents on-site and then take that paper to recycle at a secure location so that Angelina County residents can feel confident about items they are dropping off. Even businesses can participate but are limited to five boxes. The event is free, but tax-deductible donations can be made to Angelina Beautiful/Clean.

According to Emily Thornton, AB/C Executive Director, “With the rise of digital security threats, we tend to forget that paper trails are an easy way for criminals to get ahold of our information and gain access to so many different private documents. This bi-annual shredding service that we provide for our community helps create an avenue for secure destruction of personal documents at no cost to the citizens of Angelina County. It’s an easy way to make informed decisions and take simple, everyday actions to reduce, reuse and recycle. People can get their spring cleaning done and recycle at the same time!”
