A national foundation devoted to preserving historic airplanes will bring part of its collection to Lufkin soon.  Four World War II and Vietnam era aircraft will be at the Angelina County Airport March 23 through the 25th as part of the annual Wings of Freedom tour.

The collection includes three planes that flew in World War II:  a B-17 "Flying Fortress" bomber, a B-24 "Liberator" bomber, and a P-51 Mustang fighter plane.  It also has a Bell HU-1 helicopter known as the "Huey", which was used in Vietnam.

Some of these airplanes are extremely rare.  The B-24 "Liberator" coming to Lufkin is the only one in the world that's still flying, though more than 18,000 of them were made during World War II. The B-17 is one of only nine left in the world that are still flying.

Visitors will have a chance to see and climb inside the aircraft, and meet local veterans who flew in them.

Wings of Freedom charges a fee for touring the planes on the ground, and for taking a half hour or one hour flight in them.
