A number of people, myself included, have an interesting fascination with looking at grave markers in cemeteries.  I'm especially captivated by headstones that mark the final resting place of someone who lived and passed away well over 100 years ago.

I don't consider it some sort of obsession with the macabre, I just can't help but think that a few feet under the earth are the remains of someone that may have been a lot like me, albeit over a century ago.

As we get into the time of the season when folks start thinking about spooky things such as ghosts, black cats, and one-eyed encantation books, I thought I would do a little research on Texas cemeteries.  More specifically, I wanted to find out where certain Texas notables and/or celebrities were laid to rest.

Starting Local

I decided to first go with graveyards in Lufkin and Nacogdoches. Garden of Memories in Lufkin has to be one of the biggest cemeteries in the area, and Oak Grove Cemetery in Nacogdoches has to be one of the oldest.

J. Frank Wilson who had a huge rock n' roll hit in the 1960s is buried in Lufkin. Have you ever heard of Helen Vinson? She was a very popular Broadway and Hollywood actress in the 1920s and 1930s; she's buried in Nacogdoches.

Well-Known Celebrities

Later, I decided to focus on folks that anyone from the Lone Star State should know.  Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, Davy Crockett, Ray Price, Mickey Mantle, Navy SEAL Chris Kyle...where are they buried?

Did You Hear About the Extraterrestrial that Crash Landed in Texas?

It's not the start of a punch line...or maybe it should be. That space alien according to legend is buried in a small cemetery near Fort Worth. How about the most feared bucking bull of all time...yes, he has a plot, too.

Let's take a look...
