Texas Leads The Way In 3-D Printed Structures
Texas is quickly becoming a leader in the world of 3-D printing, especially in building homes and now hotels. Builders in the Lone Star state use special printers that are like concrete curb-making machines with brains.
They build layer upon layer of concrete to create sustainable structures faster and cheaper than traditional building methods. Imagine watching someone ice a cake over and over on a massive scale.
Austin-based company, ICON, is using those 3-D printers to make affordable homes. Their Georgetown "Wolf Ranch" is the largest neighborhood in the world made in this fashion according to CNN.
They also have developments in East Austin, Wimberly, and Mexico, on a smaller scale.
Texas Boasts First 3-D Printed Hotel In The World
A great way for people to see the possibilities of this new technology is to stay overnight in a 3-D printed structure. ICON is now working to make that a reality in what they are billing as the world's first 3-D printed hotel in Marfa.
This is a 60-acre expansion on what they have already built, dubbed "El Cosmico" and is set to be completed in 2026. The form will be very different than traditional hotels.
