Feds Urgently Warn Texans To Remove This From Their Wallets
For years I kept my Social Security card in my wallet. I wanted to be prepared for anything, and luckily I never lost it.
Losing your card is not a huge hassle, but I didn't. I only took it out of my wallet once I switched to a metal slim wallet.
Over time, sitting on my wallet daily, especially while driving, hurt my back. I made the switch, and at the same time inadvertently did the right thing with my Social Security card.
Put Your Social Security Card In A Safe Place
Even if you carry all of your cards in a big Texas-sized purse and aren't hassled by sitting on it, if it were to get lost or stolen with your card inside you could be wide open to identity theft.
The Social Security Administration has this to say on the subject:
Please be careful about sharing your number when asked for it. You should always ask why your number is needed, how it will be used, and what will happen if you refuse. Also, you shouldn’t carry documents that display your number.
You should never technically have to show your card, just know your number. They also stress that it is not an identification document.

Keep your card under lock and key at all times. Don't share your number, unless you have asked and there is no way around it.
