Is Southern Alexa Funny Or Dumb? My Review
The other day, a friend of mine told me about a YouTube channel that I hadn't heard of before, called "It's A Southern Thing". Naturally, being from the south, this caught my attention. So, I decided to go check it out.
The first video that I saw was called, "If Alexa Was Southern". I was less than enthused.
*Disclaimer: If you haven't watched this video, there will be spoilers throughout the rest of this article.*
This video is made to be like a commercial for a product. Specifically, a commercial for an Amazon Echo. However, this one plays on the myth that Alexa can't understand southern accents, and might get different commands confused because of them.
So, what's the resolution? To make an Amazon Echo for Southerners (available in burlap and/or reclaimed barn wood!). This Amazon Echo will be able to discern Southern accents, and get the voice commands right the first time.
It even has an attitude like the stereotypical southerner, as is seen when she scolds the kids for not using manners such as 'please' and 'thank you'. And, it uses vocabulary that is attributed (again, in a stereotypical manner), such as 'gully-washer'.
My final thoughts on this video? Well, I'm not a huge fan. Yes, we have to be able to laugh at ourselves. Do we sometimes sound like this in the south? Absolutely. Lots of times, very frequently. However, I think that the creators of "It's A Southern Thing" stretched too far for this one.
On a scale from 1 - 5, I personally give this one a fairly weak '2'. I'll go do some more research on their other videos, and I'll let y'all (see what I did there???) know what I discover.
