A tragic accident took place Thursday evening near Chireno, Texas on Highway 21.  Upon reading the press report sent to media outlets, it appears that a good Samaritan was killed after being struck by a vehicle.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), they are investigating an auto-pedestrian crash that took place on State Highway 21, approximately one-mile west of Chireno.  The accident occurred on February 3.

The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 6:25 p.m., a pedestrian was assisting with a situation involving a 2014 Jeep sport utility vehicle.  The Jeep was reportedly disabled in the westbound lane of Highway 21.  A 1999 Chevrolet passenger car was traveling westbound and tried to take evasive action to the right in order to avoid striking the disabled vehicle. However, in the process of maneuvering, the car struck the pedestrian.

The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as a 20-year-old resident of Nacogdoches, was transported to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital for treatment. There is no further word on his condition.

The pedestrian, identified as 68-year-old James Curtis Henry of Shelbyville, was transported to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased by medical staff.

Please keep James Curtis Henry along with his friends and family in your prayers during this very difficult time.  Likewise, please keep the young man who was driving the Chevrolet in your prayers as well.  He must be going through a horrible time as well, which is why we decided not to identify him.

The investigation remains ongoing, and there is no additional information at this time.
