The indictments follow a high-profile two year investigation of Edwards' 2008 campaign, and alleglations that he illegally used more than $900,000 in campaign contributions to cover up his affair with staffer Rielle Hunter and the pregnancy and birth of their daughter.

Edwards hasn't said anything about the case publicly since 2009, when he released a statement that said he was confident that no funds from his campaign were used improperly.

If convicted on all counts, Edwards could get a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each of the charges.

Although it's known that Edwards has considered a plea bargain, his attorney insists that Edwards has broken no laws and this prosecution is misguided.
