Controversial Jefferson Davis Statue at UT-Austin Will Be Moved
A few weeks ago we mentioned that the Jefferson Davis statue on the UT-Austin campus was causing quite a stir and some students wanted it to be removed from campus. Now the university has made a decision and it's a compromise. Jefferson Davis was a Confederate leader.
Davis was President of the Confederacy in the Civil War, and accused of treason after he was captured in 1865.
The Jefferson Davis statue on the UT-Austin campus was vandalized earlier this summer around the time of all the confederate flag controversy, and an online petition popped up to have the statue removed from campus. The Associated Press reported that a committee of students, faculty and alumni would decide what to do with it, and they have made that decision. The statue is going to be moved to an exhibit in the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History. There are two other statues of Confederate Generals that will stay on the campus's South Mall, but they'll get new plaques explaining more of their history.
And one side note -- President Woodrow Wilson's statue will be moved to another outdoor location, but that's because it was opposite the Jefferson Davis statue and to leave it there would have thrown off the symmetry.
