Colorado Shooting Suspect James Holmes Appears in Court, But Does Not Speak
James Holmes, the suspect in the Aurora, Colo. shooting during the midnight screening of ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ which left 12 dead and 58 other injured, appeared in court Monday.
So, what happened?
He was arraigned on the charges stemming from the July 20 shooting massacre. Wearing a red prison-issue jumpsuit and sporting a shock of orange hair, Holmes was reportedly sedate and unemotional. He did not speak.
During the hearing, Holmes, 24, was informed that he will likely be charged with first-degree murder. Formal charges are expected to be filed on July 30. A decision on whether or not to seek the death penalty will come down in the next few weeks or so. Regarding capital punishment, District Attorney Carol Chambers told reporters,”It will be a conversation we have with the victims before we make that decision.”
Holmes will be kept in custody in solitary confinement for his own safety, as part of a “no bail hold” due to the nature of the crimes of which he stands accused.
