Cherry’s Grocery & Deli Bought By Big’s

Local, family owned, Cherry's Grocery just 11 years shy of being around for 100 years, makes a change.

Though the location will still be there, the gas will still be flowing out of the pumps, this Saturday Cherry's will become a new Big's location.

At one point or another we have all popped into Cherry's on 2701 N. Raguet for a quick bite at the deli, to grab a loaf of bread, or get gas. Since 1928 the store has been family owned, for four generations. It was all started by Robert Cherry, then passed to his son Curtis Cherry, and his wife Mattie. Then it was passed down to their only son Robert G.Cherry, and he owed it until a couple of months ago, when he sold to Big's.

This Lufkin/Central landmark is already undergoing a facelift to change the name and the facade as you can see in the picture. The original Cherry's was established at 1001 S. First where Morales Mexican Restaurant is now. That used to be the edge of town in Lufkin, last stop on the way to Houston.

I know Big's has deli's and groceries at some of their locations, but this might just be their most full service location, if they keep things the way they are now. Seeing Cherry's name on the building will be missed, but it will be business as usual at the location.
