I'm a huge fan of movies and TV shows. I'm also a big fan of East Texas. When those two things are combined, I get all giddy to know that my home is being represented on a national level.

We aren't always depicted in the best light, but even when we have murderers, rednecks, and schemers on the screen, it's still fun to see the occasional sign for Lufkin or Nacogdoches in the background.

Here is a list of notable pieces of media that either take place in or near East Texas. Some have characters that are from East Texas, and others are just close enough to mention us from time to time. Be mindful of the ratings on these shows before you add any of them to your collection.

Hap and Leonard TV-MA

Based off the Nac native, Joe Landsdale novels. This series follows two friends that can't seem to shake trouble. The series is on Netflix (for now) but if you're from East Texas, you're gonna want this in your collection.

There's a scene in the first season where one of the main characters (played by Christina Hendricks of 'Mad Men' fame) stops her car at a fork in the road and has to decide on going in the direction of Lufkin, Crockett, Dallas, etc. I'm not going to spoil it for you. Just check it out.

Charlie Wilson's War Rated R

Lufkin has the Charlie Wilson VA Clinic and First Baptist of Nacogdoches is mentioned in the movie. You can get a Hollywood version of Texas Congressman, Charlie Wilson's story.

King of the Hill

Mike Judge's series 'King of the Hill' doesn't take place in East Texas, but it's darn near close enough. They may not have the pine trees everywhere, but you can spot signs for Nacogdoches in the background of some episodes. And while they are goofy cartoon characters, they give everyone else a glimpse into the simple pleasures of Texas livin'

Bubba Ho-Tep Rated R

Here's another from the mind of Joe Landsdale. Bubba Ho-Tep is the story of a geriatric Elvis Presley stuck in a Nacogdoches nursing home and fighting an ancient mummy with a cowboy hat. If that doesn't spark your interest then I don't know what's wrong with ya.

Young Sheldon

It's no secret that the smartest character on The Big Bang Theory claims to be from East Texas. Now you can catch Sheldon Cooper's East Texas origins in 'Young Sheldon.

Bernie PG-13

Bernie tells the story of the infamous Bernie Tiede the Carthage man convicted of murdering Marjorie Nugent in 1996. This movie has a LOT of looks at Carthage and actors who portray our neighbors way too well.
