25 year old Patrick Chambers of Lufkin is recovering at University Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M.  His brother, 20-year-old Taylor Chambers, was killed when the two of them were struck by a suspected drunk driver as they were trying to help pull a stranded motorist out of a snowy ditch, according to the Union County (N.M.) Sheriff’s Office.

Patrick Chambers lost one kidney, but doctors were able to save the second one, according to Christy Wooten, a friend of the family. She said he was groggy but awake and eating, and that he has several broken ribs, torn ligaments in his neck, and a chest tube.

Wooten says Patrick “will have physical rehab when he gets back home.  They are working on a brace for him to be able to sit up and for him to wear when he is transported to Lufkin. They hope to get him moved as soon as they can.”

A benefit account to help the Chambers family pay their medical and funeral expenses has been set up at the Angelina Federal Employees Credit Union.
