Suspect Shot During Struggle With Lufkin Police Officer [Video]

A suspect is being treated for a gunshot wound suffered during an officer-involved shooting in Lufkin Monday night. According to information released by the Lufkin Police Department and as shown in the video above, 26-year-old Todd Sturgis was shot when he tried to take a Lufkin police officers gun.

Sturgis had outstanding warrants from Tarrant County for kidnapping, evading arrest and delivery of a controlled substance and officers went to the location based on a tip that Sturgis was in one of the apartments.

When confronted, Sturgis refused to comply with the officer's orders, and was reaching under a mattress. He was tased, but it was ineffective and then Sturgis lunged at the officer, grabbing for the officer's gun. During the struggle, Sturgis was shot once in the torso. Sturgis was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

The officer involved in the shooting was not injured; however another officer did suffer a minor fracture from a Taser barb that lodged in his finger during the struggle.

The officer's name has not yet been released and has been put on administrative leave until the Texas Rangers have completed the investigation, per department policy.

Sturgis now faces additional charges including resisting arrest and disarming a police officer.
