A low-cost clinic that spays and neuters pets for low income pet owners is asking the City of Nacogdoches to provide funding so it can stay open.

The clinic is staffed by volunteers, and it was started in January with initial funding from the Humane Society.

A spokesperson says the clinic is providing an important service to the area.  She says reducing the number of fertile pets will help reduce the number of stray animals that have to be picked up and euthanized.

It's the only clinic of its kind in the area, and right now it's breaking even, so it's not costing taxpayers any money. The spokesperson says they need help from the City because it's not possible for the Humane Society to pay all the costs.

The clinic spokesperson says they are not trying to take clients away from local veterinarians.  Pet owners have to meet low income guidelines, and the low cost is based on the size of the pet.
