September 15th marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month! From September 15th to October 15th we celebrate our Hispanic culture and honor the diverse histories, traditions, and cultural legacies of Hispanic and Latino communities.

Throughout Hispanic Heritage month I love to celebrate Hispanics who have made an impact in our community, but there’s another thing I enjoy celebrating throughout this month: The hilarious, heartwarming, and downright unique things that make growing up in a Mexican household unforgettable.

I decided to ask El Pasoans to finish the sentence: “You know you live in a Mexican household when…” and the answers did not disappoint.

First up, the fridge situation. According to MANY, it’s basically a mystery box. Open it and find the butter tub has beans inside instead of butter (and sometimes you’re more shocked when it actually has butter).

Food is a whole personality here. Caldo in 105° heat? You better believe it! Bacon grease saved like it’s liquid gold? Of course. Tacos frying, menudo simmering, tortillas puffing up on the comal? Basically your house doubles as a restaurant.

And don’t even get us started on storage solutions. Ovens full of pans? A must in a Mexican household. Empty mole jars doubling as drinking glasses? Yup and that honestly unlocked core childhood memories! Grocery bags stuffed inside another grocery bag to use as trash liners? That’s a universal experience!

Loud Mexican Music, Tiger blankets and that flying chancla!

Cousins squeezing into one bed was another favorite. A chancla flying at record speed is something most of us are still traumatized by. And yes, the iconic tiger blanket keeps everyone warm.

But personally, one response that I have never related to more was when people mentioned that Saturday mornings meant loud music and deep cleaning. Yup. You heard the music and tried your hardest to pretend you were still sleeping but the smell of Fabuloso wouldnt let you sleep and minutes later your mom would wake you up and tell you it’s time to clean!
