(KMDL-FM) Besides the spiritual reason for the season, one of the other reasons this time of year is so endearing to us is the memories it creates and the memories we are allowed to relive. Nostalgia is a big deal around Christmas, and never is that made more obvious than in the holiday specials that air on television every year. But did you know that one of the most endearing specials on TV was almost cancelled after one showing?

Oddly enough, the public outcry over the special wasn't about something that was included in the broadcast. The public outburst came after the special displayed a major faux pas in its continuity. That's a fancy way to say the show didn't deliver on a promise that was made to the audience.

And in this case, the promise in question was made by none other than Santa Claus himself. I don't think even in 2025 we the people could stand for a Santa that tells untruths, and I can guarantee you they didn't stand for it back in 1964 when this holiday classic first hit television.

Holiday Classic Was Almost Cancelled After Its First Showing

The holiday special we are speaking of is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. You've seen it; it's only been on television at least once every year for the past 60 years. For the past 59 years, the special has included a scene that was left out of the original telecast, and over time, the scene has become one of the most endearing and emotional of the entire broadcast.

What Scene Almost Got Rudolph Cancelled From Television?

You probably remember the scene in "Rudolph" where he visits the Island of Misfit Toys. It's during that visit that Rudolph makes a promise to the toys on the island that he will tell Santa of their plight. Later in the special, once the "Bumble has bounced," we see Rudolph sharing the news of the misfit toys with Santa.

However, what the first airing of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer did not show was Santa stopping on the island and picking up the toys. It's in every airing now, but it wasn't in that first one, and thousands of parents and children, especially, were upset that Santa did not keep his promise.

The scene where Santa stops and picks up the toys was included in the next airing and every other airing ever since. Here's another nugget for you: if you watch the final scene where the elves are dropping toys from Santa's sleigh, you can see one of the elves commit a murder. I know, it's unsavoury, but it happens, and very few have noticed it but me and now you.

Go ahead, rewatch the special and see if you can spot it.

Emotional Ornaments: Nostalgia Is The New Craze in 2025

Nostalgia is the name of the game this Christmas season, and I am loving it. I've gotten flack in the past for holding on to family hand me downs (Christmas decor included), but now it looks like I was right to be sentimental.
