They call themselves "the world's first casual bar and grill". T.G.I. Fridays, which has its headquarters in Dallas, now has more than 650 restaurants in 51 countries, serving classic American food and drinks.
But in some parts of the country, diners found their locations suddenly closed for good on Tuesday to their surprise. What's going on?
TGI Fridays confirmed Wednesday that it was closing 36 "underperforming locations" in 12 states.
The company stated in a press release that closings were "part of the brand's ongoing growth strategy."
The company also announced it was selling eight previously corporate-owned restaurants in the northeast to its former CEO Ray Blanchette.
Workers at some of the shuttered restaurants said they received no notice whatsoever.
The company said it had offered more than 1,000 transfer opportunities as part of the store closures, representing more than 80% of impacted employees. But some employees are reported that they haven't received one and are out of a job all together.
