CHAOS: Hazmat Leak Reported At Texas Water Park Grand Opening
A Brand New Waterpark And Hotel Resort Had Its Grand Opening Turned Into A Chaotic Scene After A Chemical Leak Sent Workers To The Hospital.
We told you a few backs about the grand opening of Great Wolf Lodge's second Texas location in Webster, TX just outside of Houston.
At the time, we reported that the new resort had plans to push its opening up a month early from September to August 7th. Things were going along as planned until a potential disaster took place involving chemicals.
A hazardous material leak behind the resort resulted in several people being taken to area hospitals.
On the opening day of the Great Wolf Lodge in Webster, a third-party contractor at the resort improperly mixed pool chemicals, causing a chemical reaction, prompting 16 employees and contractors working “in the immediate area” to be transported to hospitals.
Construction workers at the scene said that six of their coworkers were taken to the hospital including five men and one woman who work for the Maldonado Construction Company.
The incident happened in a pool house separate from the hotel and water park.
The Webster Fire Chief Dean Spencer said a contractor had mixed two "unlike" chemicals, sodium hypochlorite and sulfuric acid, resulting in the hazardous reaction.
The Webster Fire Department released a statement where they explained that they "isolated the tanks, monitored the area and confirmed no chemicals were detected in the hotel or water park. They went on to add that "An environmental company is working with Great Wolf Lodge and the contractor to clean the tanks safely."
According to the Chron, Great Wolf Lodge released a statement saying that they have been given the all-clear and the resort and waterpark is back open for business.
