An Open Letter to Stores Pushing Christmas Four Months Early
Honestly, I'm surprised every year by how early Christmas decorations start selling in stores, even in Deep East Texas. And I'm not even talking exclusively about large stores. From the little boutiques all the way up to the worldwide retailers, it seems like they start selling Christmas merchandise earlier every year. This is the letter that I wrote out with my thoughts on it.
An Open Letter to the Stores that Have Already Started Selling Christmas Stuff
Dear (Insert Name of Store That's Already Got Their Christmas Merch Out),
We are still four months away from Christmas. Four months. One third of the year away from it. There is no need to stock your shelves with candy canes, stockings, tinsel and - yes, I've already seen them - Christmas trees. No, I'm not saying that people should wait until the last minute to buy those things. I am, however, saying that they probably shouldn't buy them with enough time left for the things to get a nice thick layer of dust on them.
Yes, I know that it's known as the most wonderful, magical time of year. That doesn't mean that we should be decking the halls in August. I mean, come on, we're still a solid month and a half away from the beginning of the fall season. FALL. My goodness, enjoy the summer. Santa's not even stocking up for Christmas yet. He's still on summer vacation, too!
And let's not just blow past the fact that if you put all the time and effort into Christmas prepping, you blow right past Thanksgiving. I know the cool thing is to have huge set-ups and sales for Halloween - which you start stocking for the day after Independence Day - and then roll right into Christmas season. But don't forget about Thanksgiving!

Here's the thing...Put a pause on Christmas selling. Enjoy the end of summer, the beginning of fall, and all the other things that come before Christmas. Then, when we get closer, by all means, go ALL out with the Christmas joy.
And no, I'm not an anti-Christmas person. I'm just not a fan of Christmas year-round, or even most of the year-round. I love Christmas. When it's on time.
