EAST TEXAS -- Caddo Lake is known for its fishing, towering cypress trees, and Spanish moss, but some of the stories surrounding this East Texas treasure are a little harder to explain. We're talking mysterious creatures lurking beneath the water, sightings of something resembling Bigfoot, and even a woman whose cries supposedly still echo through the trees.

Now, whether you believe any of that is another matter. But these stories have become part of the folklore surrounding one of East Texas' most unusual places. And given what Caddo Lake looks like on a foggy morning, it's not hard to see how a few legends could start.

What Exactly Is Allegedly Lurking Around Caddo Lake?

According to Texas Highways, Caddo Lake has inspired its share of stories about mysterious creatures.

Some accounts describe a large, hairy figure walking on two legs near the water. Others describe something much larger lurking beneath the surface. One story even describes a creature about 20 feet long.

Of course, there's no verified evidence that Bigfoot or some unidentified monster is living around Caddo Lake. But that hasn't stopped people from sharing stories about what they believe they've encountered.

And honestly, with all those twisting waterways and towering cypress trees, I can see how an unexpected splash or movement in the shadows might get somebody's imagination going.

The Woman Whose Cries Supposedly Echo Across the Water

Not all of Caddo Lake's legends involve mysterious creatures.

One particularly haunting story, also recounted by Texas Highways, tells of a young woman who would visit the lake while waiting for the man she loved to return from military service. According to the legend, when she learned he had died in battle, she continued returning to the water to grieve.

Eventually, she disappeared.

But the story doesn't end there.

Some versions of the tale say you can still hear her cries around the lake, even though no one ever found her.

It's a sad story, and there's no reason to treat it as a documented supernatural occurrence. Still, it's easy to understand why a legend like that would endure in such an atmospheric place.

Even the Lake's Beginnings Are Surrounded by Legend

The mysterious stories don't stop with what's supposedly living in or around the water.

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, one traditional Caddo account of Caddo Lake's formation involves a chief whose failure to obey the Great Spirit led to an earthquake that created the lake.

The historical explanation is less supernatural, but still fascinating.

Around 1800, an enormous accumulation of fallen trees, known as the Great Raft, blocked the Red River system. The resulting changes in water flow led to the creation of the lake we know today.

Today, Caddo Lake remains one of the most distinctive landscapes in East Texas, with its maze of bayous, Spanish moss, and bald cypress trees. It's both beautifully haunting and peaceful.

Whether you believe the stories or simply enjoy a good mystery, Caddo Lake certainly provides the perfect setting for a few goosebumps. But it is also known primarily for great fishing and recreation, with no spookiness at all.

And if you've spent much time out there, I'd be curious to know whether you've ever seen or heard anything you couldn't quite explain. Share your stories with us at tara.holley@townsquaremedia.com.
