Texas A&M University-Texarkana Accepted into NCAA Division II
Texas A&M University-Texarkana is taking a big step forward in its athletics program.
University officials announced last Thursday morning, July 9, that TAMUT has been accepted into the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and will begin the transition from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
The official notification came during a phone call from NCAA representatives to University President Dr. Ross Alexander and Director of Athletics Ryan Wall.
Dr. Alexander said in a press release,
We are thrilled to formally announce that we have been accepted into NCAA Division II athletics.
Alexander praised Wall and the athletics staff for their work throughout the application process and said the move will help the university continue attracting talented student-athletes while providing a higher level of competition and an even better game-day experience for students and the community.
Wall called the approval a historic milestone for the university, saying,
This is a historic milestone for our university and a testament to the hard work, dedication, and collaboration of so many people
He thanked faculty, staff, coaches, campus partners, and Dr. Alexander for helping make the transition possible.
What Happens Next as Texas A&M Texarkana Moves Toward NCAA Division II?
The move to NCAA Division II does not happen overnight; it will take a few years. Schools must meet requirements related to compliance, facilities, budgets, financial aid, and conference membership before becoming full NCAA members.

Before submitting its application, TAMUT received an invitation to join the Lone Star Conference, one of the top conferences in NCAA Division II.
The transition process usually takes about three years to complete. However, the NCAA now offers a faster two-year option for schools that already meet many of its standards. University officials say they are working to put Texas A&M -Texarkana in the best position possible to qualify for the expedited process.
If approved, the move would mark another major milestone in the continued growth of Texas A&M University-Texarkana. Way to go, Eagles!
