Governor Greg Abbott is celebrating what state leaders call a historic launch for Texas’ new school choice initiative. Did you apply over the couple of weeks? Over 100,000 of your fellow Texans did.

Texas Off To An Amazing Start

Yes, more than 100,000 Texas families have submitted applications for the Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) program in less than two weeks. State officials say it marks the largest launch of a new school choice program in the nation’s history.

The TEFA program allows eligible families to use state funds to pay for approved educational options outside of their assigned public school. The program is administered by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts under Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock.

Abbott said the early application numbers show strong demand from families seeking more control over their children’s education.

$1 Billion Program Created by Senate Bill 2

The program was created through Senate Bill 2, which Abbott signed into law. The legislation provides $1 billion in funding for families who want additional academic options for their children.

Families accepted into the program can use the funds for private school tuition, transportation, and other approved education-related expenses.

Application Window Open Through March 17

Applications opened February 4, 2026, and will remain open through March 17, 2026.

State officials emphasize the program is not first-come, first-served. Families may apply at any time during the application window without affecting their child’s chances of receiving funding.

All Texas children who live in the state and are U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.
