Huntington Posts Perfect District Mark, Achieves Massive Milestone
Huntington Basketball State Champions 1974
In 1974, the Huntington Red Devils basketball team edged the Snook Bluejays 41-39 to claim the Class A State Championship. In that game, Robert Barnes had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, Roy Meyers added 12 points and 9 boards, and Steve Thornton finished in double figures, adding 10 points. Huntington finished the year 38-2. It was also the last time the Red Devils were perfect in district play...until this year.
Huntington Red Devils, Undefeated District Champs Again
Well, it only took a little over 5 decades, but Huntington had a perfect run through district play in the 2025-2026 basketball season, on their way to claiming a district championship.
Left to Right: Jared Harris, Wyatt Stover, Jackson Jones, Jason Anderson, Connor Johnson, Zac Cox, Bradley Hamilton, Grayson Johnson. The team is coached by Josh Jones, Zane Blount, and Elwin Lamon.
The Red Devils flipped a switch going into district play. Huntington had lost 7 out of 8 games to close out 2025, but when the new year arrived and district play began, they reeled off 12 straight wins. Two players on this year's team are grandkids of players from the 1974 state championship team.
On the left, that's Tim Johnson with his grandson, Grayson Johnson. On the right, it's Donnie Harris with his grandson, Jared Harris. Here's a look at some of the other 1974 state champs, plus a few years.
This year's district championship also marks the first time the Huntington boys' basketball team has won first place in their district since 1979. Here's an on-court snapshot provided to us from the Huntington yearbook.
Looking Ahead To The Playoffs
Huntington will play East Chambers in the first round of the Class 3A, Division I playoffs. This will be their second meeting this season. In December, East Chambers defeated Huntington by 2 in overtime. Here's hoping the Red Devils can get their 13th straight win on their way to a bi-district championship.
