Garrison is a charming town located on Highway 59 in northeastern Nacogdoches County. The Garrison Bulldog football team is state-ranked this year, the town was the first in Texas to elect a female mayor (Maud Irwin, 1937), and it's home to the historic Wiley Hotel

But this weekend, the sights in Garrison won't be so pleasant.

Destruction and Devastation Come to Garrison

As you drive on Highway 59, past the south side of town this weekend, drive safely, because you're going to see a multitude of first responders working horrible accident scenes. An 18-wheeler crushing flipped cars, a school bus that has come to rest on a sedan, vehicles impaled by a utility pole...it will be an unnerving sight that will probably cause you to take your eyes off the road.

No Need to Worry About The Wreckage

What you're seeing in Garrison is a good thing. The Garrison Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a huge training event. Numerous firefighters, first responders, and towing companies are participating in classroom and hands-on training for catastrophic accident scenarios.

These types of accidents are not the norm on Texas highways, but they DO occur. I applaud the Garrison firefighters and all those involved in being proactive so that they can be experienced and efficient if these events were to happen. This is the type of training that can go a long way towards saving lives in the future.

The training will continue through this Sunday, September 21. Here are a few photos of what you'll be seeing as you pass through Garrison this weekend.
