The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Tornado Watch for much of Deep East Texas, Northeast Texas, and Northern Louisiana. This watch is effective until 1 a.m.

Numerous storms, many that are severe, have been flaring up across north-central and northeast Texas this afternoon. A confirmed tornado was reported near the town of Thornton, Texas which is located southwest of Fairfield.

This tornado watch includes the following Deep East Texas counties:

  • Angelina
  • Nacogdoches
  • Cherokee
  • Trinity
  • Houston
  • Rusk
  • Shelby
  • Sabine
  • San Augustine

The primary threats in the watch area include:

  • A few tornadoes and a couple of intense tornadoes (EF2+) are possible
  • Scattered large hail likely with isolated very large hail events
    to 2.5 inches in diameter possible
  • Scattered damaging wind gusts to 70 mph are possible

The environment will continue to become increasingly
favorable this evening for supercells, which will pose a risk for
large hail and tornadoes, along with damaging winds where storms
tend to cluster later this evening.

The tornado watch area is approximately along and 80 statute miles
east and west of a line from 40 miles north of Shreveport to 35
miles east of Lufkin.

Polk, Tyler, Jasper, and Newton Counties ARE NOT included in this Tornado Watch, however, severe weather is still a possibility.

A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.
