September in East Texas started with a strong dose of fall weather, followed by a return to summer heat. This was followed by a few more weeks of summer weather.

But then, October arrived, and the autumn temps we had been waiting for...still didn't come. Instead, the first days of October brought highs in the 90s. We did get a bit of a cool down over the past few days, but this weekend will bring high temperatures that will get close to breaking records.

Temperatures in the 90s will blanket much of the eastern half of Texas with some triple-digit heat possible near the Texas/Oklahoma border.

Here are the forecasted high temperatures for this Sunday

  • Lufkin...93
  • Tyler...94
  • Nacogdoches...92
  • Livingston...94
  • Texarkana...92
  • Dallas...96
  • Longview...94
  • Houston...93

Temperatures Take a Big Dip

A strong cold front should cross East Texas by Monday night. Temperatures will only reach into the 70s on Tuesday, with overnight lows dipping into the 40s by Tuesday night for much of northeast and Deep East Texas.

Some computer models show that low temperatures in the 30s are not out of the question.

What About Some Needed Rain?

Unfortunately, probably not. There may be a slight chance of rain as the front passes, but that should be the exception rather than the rule.

We could use a downpour. Burn bans across East Texas continue to grow. Smith, Anderson, Henderson, Houston, and Walker Counties are all under burn bans.

The drought indicator used by the Texas Forest Service shows that almost all of Deep East Texas is moving into the severe category.
