The Texas Department of Transportation is advising East Texas motorists of upcoming construction on two major highways. Anyone travelling on Highway 59 through Livingston, or Highway 69 between Zavalla and the Jasper County line may experience minor detours or delays. Construction crews will be installing new cable barriers along portions of these highways.

These flexible barriers are a common sight in the medians on interstate highways. They have also been recently installed on Highway 59 between Redland and Nacogdoches. They are made from steel cables and mounted on weak steel posts. They are designed to absorb the energy from vehicles that enter the median. They also capture and redirect vehicles crashing into the median. The end result is fewer severe injuries.

Locations For Cable Barrier Installations

On Monday, May 4, work to install these cable barriers is scheduled to begin along portions of Highway 69 in Angelina County and Highway 59 in Polk County. Newnan, Georgia-based contractor Massana Construction, Inc., was awarded the contract.

In Angelina County, the work will occur on Highway between FM 1270 and the Jasper County line. In Polk County, barrier installation will take place along Highway 59 between the intersection with US 190 and 0.34 miles south of Business 59. Work on both locations will occur simultaneously. Lane and shoulder closures along the inside lanes of each highway will be necessary during construction. Speed limits will also be reduced by 10 mph in and approaching the work zones. Drivers should slow down and stay alert for changing traffic patterns, workers, and equipment in these areas.
