Hope of hopes, the long-awaited Deadwood revival got our hopes ups a few months back with talk that the movie reunion had finally gotten off the ground, but in the world of TV, months can be a lifetime. Now, HBO’s president swears up and down that the movie will happen, just as soon as David Milch finds the opportunity (and cast).

TVLine had a chance to speak to HBO boss Mike Lombardo (the same who tipped his hand toward a two-season Game of Thrones renewal), confirming that he’d given a green- light to Milch for the long-gestating revival:

David has our commitment that we are going to do it. He pitched what he thought generally the storyline would be — and knowing David, that could change. But it’s going to happen.

Lombardo also noted that Milch had at least one project in the pipeline first, after which it would be up to him to gather the prolific cast (sadly without Ralph Richeson), which in three seasons included Justified lead Timothy Olyphant, future Game of Thrones star Ian McShane, Fear The Walking Dead matriarch Kim Dickens, Jessica Jones player Robin Weigert, Breaking Bad breakout Anna Gunn, Paula Malcolmson, Molly Parker, and so many more. The series also featured early guest spots for Parks and Recreation breakout Nick Offerman (take caution Googling that one), and even a young Kristen Bell.

The understanding is that when he is done with [his other project] he will turn his attention to [writing the] script for the Deadwood film … I’m going to leave [the casting] in David’s hands. He’s confident he will be able to. The cast is unbelievably [tight]. Some casts and creators form a bond that becomes relevant for the rest of their lives. This was a defining moment for a lot of them.

For those unaware, HBO’s Deadwood ran from 2004 to 2006, showcasing the rise of Deadwood, South Dakota from frontier gold prospecting camp to fully-annexed territory. It also swore like the Dickens, which you can see for yourself below.

In any case, will Milch finally get the Deadwood movie off the ground, now that HBO is officially onboard?
