Update:  An Arizona judge has accepted confessed shooter Jared Loughner's plea of guilty to all charges, and will sentence him to life in prison with no possibility of parole. Loughner agreed to the plea deal to avoid the death penalty.

Loughner's attorneys convinced the judge that the heavily medicated Loughner was competent to stand trial, and that he's mentally capable of understanding the charges and what a plea agreement means.

In a joint statement, Giffords' husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, says they support the plea agreement because it will spare the victims of the mass shooting and those who witnessed it the ordeal and pain of a trial, and allow them to move on with their lives.
