The two Latter Day Saints missionaries were riding their bicycles when they were hit headon by an oncoming car just after dark Tuesday.  A third missionary was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Texas DPS officers say three people in the car ran away on foot without stopping to help the men.

The driver, who is not an American citizen, surrendered to authorities at the Progreso International Bridge a few hours later. Two other suspects remain on the run.

According to the Wikipedia, LDS missionaries serve voluntarily. They're not paid a salary, and most are supported by their families.  Over its history, the LDS Church has sent more than one million missionaries to countries all over the world.
