Protect Your Dog During Holiday Travel In Texas

The holidays are coming up fast and so is holiday travel season. If you're planning road trips to visit relatives in Texas with your dog(s), here are a few things to know.

"Holiday travel season", (late November - early January), is almost here and zillions of Texans will be hitting the road to visit friends and families in and outside of Texas.

If you're one of them, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Some dogs love to go for a ride, some, (mine), are ok with it and others freak out. They get stressed and some even have to be drugged to keep them calm.

Fortunately, there are plenty of safe products on the market to help keep Fido mellow including CBD snacks and, if your furr-ball is super jumpy, your vet can hook you up with prescription grade drugs. (I call them "doggy downers:")

Travel Tips For Dogs

If you're going to be on the road for a long time with your pooch, you should consider these things:

• Get 'em checked by the vet first.
• Get them a doggy car seat and bring a pet first aid kit.
• Get a tracking collar or fasten an air tag to your pet, especially if in unfamiliar territory.
• Stop every 2-3 hours so your pup can stretch and calm down a bit.
• DON'T leave your dog in a hot car. Don't leave it in a car period unless you're there too and the AC/heater is on.
• Even the warmest parts of Texas can get cold so you may need a dog sweater.
• If hiking, river walking or anything like that; buy 'em some doggy shoes.
• Bring some of your dogs things like their bed/blanket or a favorite toy to ease anxiety.
• Bring collapsible bowls and water.
• Research dog friendly places along the way to and at your destination.

Dogs like excitement too and they love being with their humans so, by all means, bring them along. A pet boarding house or kennel will probably stress them out just as much so; why not?
