Scary Stuff, Someone is Attacking 911 Systems in Texas
In Texas and across the country, when we are dealing with an emergency and we cannot handle the situation ourselves we’ve all been taught to call 911. It’s a lifeline when we need assistance, but what do you do if you need help and you cannot get through to the emergency services you need. That is a helpless and desperate feeling and one that some Texans faced just a few days ago.
The details came from KVUE, regarding Central Texas 911 call lines being ‘intentionally’ overloaded this past Sunday. It wasn’t just one police department that was affected as multiple in the area were reporting disruptions for hours. But it sounds like they know a little bit more about how this disturbing situation took place.
Details About the 911 Lines Being Overloaded
Officials at the Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG) reported the phone lines being overloaded. This intentional disruption of service was caused by a random Telephony Denial of Service (TDoS), it began in Round Rock and it took AT&T technicians to correct the issue.
How Long Was the System Overloaded?
Robocalls began around 1:00 p.m. and normal operations were back around 8:00 p.m. As you would expect there are things being implemented now so this doesn’t happen again. Other areas including Austin, Cedar Park, and Lakeway police departments also reported issues. As well as Lago Vista, Taylor and Marble Falls.
This could lead to very dangerous situations, let’s hope whatever fix they are implementing will be done statewide, so this doesn’t happen again in Texas.
