The Mt. Enterprise Wildcats take on the Shiner Comanches this Friday night in a Class 2A, Division II state semifinal showdown. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. in New Caney. Both Shiner and Mt. Enterprise are undefeated with identical 14-0 records. The Wildcats average over 60 points a game, but this will be the toughest defense they have faced this season.

Kaegan Ash Is A Beast...But Wait, There's More

Type the word 'phenomenal' into any online thesaurus, and every synonym offered is a great description of the senior running back. As of this writing, he has rushed for 4,322 yards this season. That shattered a 72-year record for the most ever by a Texas high school running back. He has scored 67 touchdowns this year, and he's less than 100 yards away from breaking the record for most career rushing yards.

Yes, Kaegan is ALL THAT, but so is his team.

Ash rushed for 501 yards, and the soon-to-be Texas Tech Red Raider broke tackles, made players miss, and used his speed to pull away from defenders. But all that God-given talent alone does not account for his record-setting numbers, nor is it the primary reason for this historic season. This Mt. Enterprise team plays as a family and leaves every drop of effort on the football field.

How To Play Team Football

I took some time to watch some of the highlights from Mt. Enterprise's victory over Bremond last week, and as a former offensive lineman (from decades ago), my heart swelled over what I witnessed. Repeatedly, linemen were sprinting 50+ yards downfield so that they could throw a block to spring Ash into the end zone. At the line of scrimmage, I saw the center, guards, and tackles dominating their opponents. Although I'm calling out the linemen, every Wildcat on the field exhibited the same effort.

Click on the video recap, and just watch. In the first highlight, watch a wide receiver (#10) throw a pancake block. At the 2:10 mark of the video, watch two offensive linemen throw key blocks 50 yards downfield. There were other highlights illustrating this team effort that have since been removed.

Giving Due Thanks

Friday night will be a monumental showdown. I'll definitely be pulling for the Wildcats to make the state championship game. Regardless of what happens, the following needs to be said.

To The Players - Thank you for proudly representing your school, town, family, and friends. Thanks for taking the talents and gifts that God has given you and giving glory to Him.

To The Coaches - Players do not play with this kind of passion, effort, and selflessness without your guidance and instruction. Head Coach Scott Ponder and staff...thank you for the love you are showing this team.

To The Parents - Young men do not play with such character and integrity unless they are placed on the right path. Thank you for showing them the way, and for being great examples.

To The Village - Mt. Enterprise...what a ride! Your support and love for this team are so infectious and fun to watch. To the students, school staff, spirit squads, band, and everyone proud to wear Wildcat blue every Friday night, thank you for celebrating this team.
